Roy M. Hinson, Jr. has had an accomplished career in professional sports, the corporate world and community service. Mr. Hinson is a National Basketball Association (NBA) Player’s Association Representative, where he administers the Financial Education Program whose focus is on educating NBA Players to become prudent businessmen. Mr. Hinson is also the founder and President of Hinson Financial Services, a Commercial Real Estate finance company.
Known for an outstanding NBA career as a forward/center, Roy was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the 20th pick in the first round in 1983. He spent 3 years with the Cavs and was named Most Valuable Player in 1986. After the season, Roy was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for the Number 1 pick, where he played with such greats as Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Charles Barkley, Maurice Cheeks and Andrew Toney. After one and a half seasons with the 76ers, Roy was traded home to play for the New Jersey Nets. In 1990, Roy had his first of 12 knee surgeries that in 1993 ended his playing career. During his 10 year career in the NBA, Roy averaged 14.2 points per game. As a collegian, he was selected to the 1981 World University Games team, which won a Gold Medal, an All-American at Rutgers University in 1983 and inducted into the Rutgers University Hall of Fame for Basketball in 1995.
Along with his success on the basketball court, Roy has also seen success off the court in making a difference in his community. While playing for the NBA, Roy appeared as the invited speaker for numerous charitable fund-raisers. Roy is very active in youth work, having conducted and hosted many basketball clinics for the Special Olympics, the Salvation Army, the NBA Players Association, and many others. He has also worked with the Juvenile Justice System in New Jersey. Roy currently serves as a Director of the Children’s Coalition and volunteers at the Jewish Community Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. |
